Coach Tom Boggs Founder Austin SLAM 1986
Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on October 25.
Coach Boggs started the Austin SLAM Program in 1986 when he retired from professional baseball. He was the 2nd overall pick of the 1974 Major League Player Draft by the Texas Rangers. He played professionally for 13 years and pitched for the Atlanta Braves and the Texas Rangers for almost 7 years at the Major League level.
Tommy graduated from Austin Lanier High School in 1974. He was a High School All American in baseball in 1974. He also lettered and received many awards in football, basketball, and track. It has often been stated that Tommy was one of the top All-Around athletes to ever come out of the city of Austin. He was recruited heavily to play college football but after watching Earl Campbell demolish everyone at a Longhorn practice chose the baseball route. Tommy was planning on attending the University of Texas to play baseball before being drafted to play professionally.
Tom has been married to wife Suzette for 26 years. They have a daughter, Brooke, who graduated from the University of Texas in May, 2005. Their son, Austin, graduates from Texas A&M in 2008.
Tommy has spent his life near a baseball field both as a player and a coach. His accomplishments in baseball are being recognized by the "Jackie Moore Lifetime Achievement Award" at the Round Rock Express banquet in February 2008. |
Coach Ron Toenjes Director of Hitting
Born in Belleville, Illinois on November 29.
Coach Toenjes has been a hitting instructor with Austin SLAM Baseball and private instructor for over 26 years. He was a Major League Baseball Scout with the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers and an instructor at the Hitting Zone in Round Rock, Texas.
Ron played professional baseball in 1976 with the Texas City Stars under skipper "Dirty Al" Gallagher in Independent Professional Baseball. He graduated from and played baseball at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas in 1972 with a Degree in Social Studies. He was an All-Conference Pitcher in 1970 and 1972. He also attended Southwestern Illinois Junior College in 1969. Coach Toenjes graduated from Bishop Althoff High School in Belleville, Illinois in 1968. Ron was a high school baseball coach for many years.
Ron and his wife Debby will celebrate 33 years of marriage in July 2008! They have two children, Todd, 29, and Ryan, 26. |
Mark Keeney Team Coordinator:
Born in Springfield, MA on March 25.
Mark plays a key role for Austin Slam Baseball. He has been involved with Austin Slam for many years and both of his sons played ball for Slam. He attended Lexington High School where he was an excellent tennis athlete.
Mark later attended Ohio State University and Central Connecticut University. He is an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
Mark has coached the Walnut Hills Swim Club and had two stints coaching with Delwood Pony/Colt from 1981-1982 and 1986-1991. He coached at Northwest Little League from 1991-1995. He has coached and been a key member of Austin Slam Baseball since 1991.
Mark is married to Renee and they have two sons, Shannon and Shaun. Renee too has been a very important part of Austin Slam via her efforts at our many fundraising events. |
Coach Jeff Andrewartha Team Coordinator:
Born in Austin, TX on June 2.
Jeff started coaching with Austin Slam in 1993. After taking a 4 year break to go on the road with former SLAM player and Country and Western singer/songwriter Rick Trevino, he rejoined the coaching staff in 1997. He is currently in his 13th year coaching for Austin SLAM Baseball. Jeff works with the 15-16 year old teams.
Jeff was a member of the first SLAM team in 1986 when the program was started by Tommy Boggs. Jeff played 4 years at Round Rock High School under Coach John Langerhans. During those 4 years the Dragons won 3 District Titles and were a 1988 Region Finalists team. As a Dragon, Jeff was named All District and All Cen-Tex in 1986, 87, 88, and 89. In 1989 he was named All State Infielder.
Jeff received a scholarship to McLennan Jr. College (Waco, TX) playing under Coach Paul Miller. As Highlander, Jeff was a two-time All Conference 1st baseman, and in 1991 after hitting 12 Home Runs was named Honorable Mention All American. Upon completing 2 years at MCC Jeff received a scholarship to Dallas Baptist to play for Coach Jim Harp. After one year at Dallas Baptist, Jeff returned to Austin in 1993 to play for Concordia University under the late Coach James Keller. While at Concordia Jeff was named All District 1st baseman, District IV Player of the Year, Team MVP, and NAIA Honorable Mention All American Infielder. Jeff was also a member of the 1993 team that won Concordia University its 1st ever Independent Conference Championship. (44-18). As of today Jeff still holds the home run record at CU.
On August 19, 2000, Jeff married Stacey Brookshire formerly of Tyler. They have two boys named Raffe and Rinn, and a daughter named Reese. |
Clint Mokry Austin Slam Coach
Born in Austin, Texas on .
Clint played baseball with Austin Slam beginning at the age of 12! He was an outstanding player and pitcher for Slam when he was in high school. He graduated from Taylor High School in 2001. He then played college ball at TCU where he was a pitcher for the "Horned Frogs".
Clint is a very important part of Austin Slam Baseball. He not only coaches for Slam, but he helps run the daily operations of the whole organization.
Clint is married to wife, Joselyn. Joselyn plays a key role in our merchandising for Slam and our many fundraising events. She is also an expert with horses. |
Gavin Wright Austin Slam Coach
Born in Lufkin, Texas on May 6.
Gavin was a former Austin Slam player for several years. He was an outstanding high school player and could crush the ball.
Gavin attended Lufkin High School where he was an All-State player for two years. He later attended Blinn Junior College in Brenham. He had signed to play at the University of Alabama before being drafted by the Houston Astros and choosing to play professionally. He played with the Astros organization for 6-1/2 years and was on the Round Rock Express team.
Gavin currently works for Select Sports Group representing professional baseball athletes. He is a great asset to the Austin Slam organization.
Gavin and his wife, Cari, have two young sons, Logan and Landon. Cari is a teacher and cheerleader sponsor at Pflugerville High School. |
Coach Brian Schmitt Austin Slam Coach
Born in Taylor, Texas on May 16.
Brian is in his 3rd year of coaching for Austin SLAM Baseball. After pro-ball he attended Texas State University, pursuing a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. Brian has been a private baseball instructor for the last 7 years.
Coach Schmitt has five years of professional playing experience, four years with the Houston Astros organization and one year of Independent Professional Baseball in the Central League. He was drafted in the 30th round of the 1997 Major League Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles and in the 14th round of the 1999 Major League Player Draft by the Houston Astros. In his 5 years of professional experience, Brian was a member of the 1999 Appalachian League, 2000 Midwest League and 2001 South Atlantic League Championship teams as Houston Astros Minor League affiliates. Brian received a scholarship and played baseball at Blinn Junior College (Brenham, TX) from 1998-1999. As a Buccaneer, Brian was a 1999 All Conference First Baseman. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1997. The Plainsman were 1996 Texas 5-A State Champions and Brian was a two-time First Team All State member.
On November 6, 2004, Brian married Kelly House who also attended Texas State University and graduated in August 2005 with her Masters in Business Administration. They are expecting their first child in April 2008. |
Brooke Boggs Tournament Coordinator
Born in Austin, Texas on January 18.
Brooke graduated from Connally High School in 2000 where she played volleyball and was a four year letterman in basketball and softball. She attended the University of Texas where she was a Collegiate Handball "National Champion" of her division in 2003 and a member of the Disch-Falk Diamonds. She graduated from Texas in May 2005 with a degree in Corporate Communications.
After graduation she moved to San Antonio where she was the Marketing Director for the Baseball Division of a sports agency representing professional athletes. In 2007 she moved back to Austin to work for Concordia University Texas where she is currently the Sports Information Director. She handles the Marketing and Media for the entire Athletic Department.
Being the daughter of Tommy Boggs, she has worked many Austin Slam tournaments since she was a very young girl. Brooke has always loved sports and enjoys working with her family. |
Suzette Boggs Administrative Assistant
Born in Austin, Texas on February 19.
Suzette has worked beside her husband, Tommy Boggs, as long as Austin Slam Baseball has been around. She's a native Austinite. She is an avid sports fan and played basketball, softball, ran track and was a cheerleader at Pflugerville High School.
Suz has handled many things in the background for Austin Slam Baseball since 1986.
She even washed team uniforms while traveling in the "early" Slam days, that is until Tommy and Ron forgot to pick her up from the laundromat next to an Army base one day! |
Austin Boggs Austin Slam Coach
Born in Austin, Texas on July 23.
Austin Boggs is currently in his 2nd year of coaching on the Austin Slam staff. However, being the son of Tommy Boggs, he has spent his lifetime in the dugouts with Austin Slam Teams. He has captured much baseball knowledge through the years having grown up at the baseball field.
Austin graduated high school in 2003 from Connally High School where he was a four year starter for the Cougars and received All-State honors 3 years in a row. He was also was a two-time first team All-District quarterback while at Connally. He was a member of the Texas A&M Baseball team where he was the starting 3rd baseman for 3 years. He was a freshman All-American and was named the Big 12 Player of the Week and All-Conference Honorable Mention. He was on the 2004 Aggie team which made it to the Super-Regionals at LSU. Austin also attended Sam Houston State University for one semester and was on the Conference Championship team which was one game away from a Super Regional birth.
Austin graduates from Texas A&M in 2008 with a degree in Agricultural Business. He is currently an Assistant Superintendent with J.C. Evans Construction Company in Austin. |
Wes Butler Austin Slam Coach
Born in on .
Wes was an Austin Slam Baseball alumni and is currently on the Slam coaching staff. He attended McCallum high school where Coach Ron Toenjes was his high school baseball coach.
Wes has one daughter born in 2006. |
Miles Franklin Austin Slam Coach
Born in Austin, Texas on .
Miles was a Slam player since he was 12 years old. He was a player that gave 125% while he was playing ball. Miles is currently in his 2nd year as a Coach for Austin Slam.
He graduated high school from Pflugerville High School where he played baseball and football for the Panthers. He attended Ole Miss University where he was the starting center fielder.
Miles is currently an assistant baseball coach for Rob Penders at St. Edwards University. |
Drew French Austin Slam Coach
Born in Seguin, Texas on July 19.
Drew grew up in Austin and attended Stephen F. Austin High School. He was on the 2001 5-A State runner-up high school baseball team and a 2002 All-District outfield/pitcher. He also received the Texas State Representative Dawnna Dukes' Leadership Award.
Drew played baseball for Concordia University Texas and was later a pitching coach for Mike Gardner at Concordia University.
While a player at the University he received 2004, 2005 & 2006 All Academic American Southwest Conference Honors. He also was American Southwest Conference Honorable Mention in 2006.
Drew is currently an Assistant Coach at the University of Alabama. |

Coach Steven Ponder Austin Slam Coach
Born in Austin, TX on November 16.
Coach Ponder was a former player for Austin Slam and has been involved with Slam since he was a middle school student! He is in his 5th year coaching for Austin SLAM.
Coach Ponder has 2 years of professional baseball playing experience. He was drafted in the 17th round of the 2002 Major League Player Draft by the Colorado Rockies. Steven played Aggie Baseball for three years as a pitcher, 1st baseman and outfielder. He graduated as a stand-out ball player from Westlake High School in 1999.
He later became a Student Assistant Baseball Coach at Texas A&M for two years under Mark Johnson. Steven brings a lot of baseball knowledge to our Austin Slam coaching staff.

Scott Shepperd Austin Slam Coach
Born in Austin, Texas on August 27.
Scott is the grandson of former University of Texas baseball coach Cliff Gustafson. Scott grew up on the baseball field watching his grandfather coach. He was the bat boy for many years for the Longhorns.
He is currently working on his Masters and coaching at Sam Houston University under the direction of Coach Mark Johnson.
Scott attended Concordia University where he was a player/coach for the University with Mike Gardner.
He also was asked to help coach at the college level in the summer league in Alaska. Not only did he love the opportunity to coach in this league, but he was able to experience some of the finest fishing in the world!
Coach Shepperd is an excellent coach with a desire to share his baseball knowledge with young athletes.
